Use the morning for final gear, water, fuel, and food, then use the roadside overlook at the shared Owl Rock and Elephant Butte start without presenting either technical objective as a normal hike. Buck Canyon Overlook is the optional Island in the Sky finish before paid Horsethief.
Three different uses share this photographed start area: Owl Rock is a climbing outing, Elephant Butte is technical, and the roadside overlook is available without committing to either route. The public pin records the shared area rather than route guidance.
